This will be in accordance with the Better Ads Standards.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chrome is set to start blocking intrusive ads in short-form videos from August 5th, 2020. Google will be implementing this update in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/better-ads-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Better Ads Standards<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Improving user experience and user privacy has been the central focus of Chrome updates in the last few months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chrome recently decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/google-privacy-update-chrome-to-phase-out-user-agent-strings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freeze user-agent strings<\/a>, a move that will inhibit publishers from fingerprinting their website users. Google also implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/what-publishers-need-to-know-about-googles-samesite-cookie-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the SameSite cookie update<\/a> in February, 2020 which makes labelling cookies mandatory, thus protecting user privacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of the updates have been introduced after receiving feedback from online users.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such feedback was the intrusive nature of ads within short-form videos. Ads have often been at the forefront of issues that deteriorate user experience. There can be many different kinds of ads that can be included within these videos.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"schema-how-to wp-block-yoast-how-to-block\"><p class=\"schema-how-to-description\">However, here are three major kinds of ads that users find particularly intrusive.<\/p> <ol class=\"schema-how-to-steps\"><li class=\"schema-how-to-step\" id=\"how-to-step-1668513958551\"><strong class=\"schema-how-to-step-name\"><strong>Long, non-skippable pre-roll ads<\/strong>:<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-how-to-step-text\">These include ads that play before the beginning of a video. They may have one or more ads but the combined length always comes up to 31 seconds. These do not allow users to skip the ad(s) within the first 6 seconds. Often known to cause a lot of disruption to user experience.<br\/><img width=\"836\" height=\"836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/CBA-long-pre-roll-V02-1.gif\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Pre roll video ads\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/p> <\/li><li class=\"schema-how-to-step\" id=\"how-to-step-1668513989990\"><strong class=\"schema-how-to-step-name\"><strong>Mid-roll ads<\/strong>:<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-how-to-step-text\">These are ads that appear any time in the middle of the video. Sometimes, there are one or more mid-roll ads in a short-form video. These have been termed as extremely intrusive because they interrupt the user especially when they are immersed in a video.<br\/><img width=\"836\" height=\"836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/CBA-Mid-Roll-Ad-V01.gif\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Mid roll video ad\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/p> <\/li><li class=\"schema-how-to-step\" id=\"how-to-step-1668514027192\"><strong class=\"schema-how-to-step-name\"><strong>Image or text ads<\/strong>:<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-how-to-step-text\">These are large, static\/animated, and non-linear ads that appear on a video. These have two criteria of display. They either cover more than 20% of the video or are placed in the middle of the video if it was divided horizontally into three sections.\u00a0<br\/><img width=\"836\" height=\"836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/CBA-Large-Display-Ad-V01.gif\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Middle video ads\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/p> <\/li><\/ol><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-did-the-coalition-for-better-ads-define-this\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Did_the_Coalition_for_Better_Ads_Define_this\"><\/span><strong>How Did the Coalition for Better Ads Define this?&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision on these intrusive ads was taken after surveying 45,000 consumers from 8 countries. These countries were specifically selected for their collective 60% contribution to global online advertising spending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cAlthough the growth of ad blocking has slowed down in recent years, the industry still has a long way to go to ensure that the ads they serve are relevant and enhance consumers\u2019 online experience. The new Standard for video ads is a positive step forward, following the Better Ads Standards and the work the Coalition and its members are doing globally and locally.\u201d <\/p><cite> Stephan Loerke, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterads.org\/press-releases\/cba-announces-better-ads-standard-short-form-video\">CEO of the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA)<\/a> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Coalition for Better Ads, a move of this nature encourages people to stop using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/what-publishers-can-learn-from-ad-blockers\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/what-publishers-can-learn-from-ad-blockers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ad blockers<\/a>. Ever since they started implementing standards, ad blocker installation rates have significantly declined in North America and Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-will-happen-to-youtube\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Will_Happen_to_YouTube\"><\/span><strong>What Will Happen to YouTube?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like other websites that feature video content, YouTube will also follow suit. In the next four months, YouTube\u2019s ad display policies within short-form videos will be revised in accordance with the standards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-should-publishers-do-about-this-update\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Should_Publishers_Do_About_This_Update\"><\/span><strong>What Should Publishers Do About This Update?&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google has provided time to publishers to stop showing these ads to their visitors. The amount of time provided to implement these changes is 4 months. From August 5, 2020, if any publisher is still showing these disruptive ads to their visitors, Google will automatically ban them. This is applicable for all countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, Google will update its other set of tools including Ad Manager in accordance with these standards.&nbsp;<br><br>Publishers can review their site status in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/ad-experience-unverified?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ad Experience report<\/a>. This report helps publishers in understanding if they are violating any ad standards according to Chrome\u2019s policies.
