The AI ascendancy that started with producing plain content is now reshaping how users interact with traditional search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft Copilot was the first AI chatbot to start attributing sources by including links from the original content. As conversations around plagiarism and copyright infringement gained traction, other platforms began implementing similar source attribution. I also had the honor of seeing an AdPushup blog listed as one of the cited references in a Claude.ai response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many publishers are seeing the result of this source attribution fine-tuning. 63% of websites are receiving LLM traffic as of February 2025 (<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-traffic-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ahrefs<\/a>). A <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/chatgpt-referral-traffic-to-publishers-sites-has-nearly-doubled-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Digiday<\/a> article has even reported the spike in ChatGPT traffic going towards publishers\u2019 websites. The story doesn\u2019t end here; it has nearly doubled this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing an excerpt from the article:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>ChatGPT sent 243.8 million visits to 250 news and media websites in April 2025, up 98% from 123.2 million visits this January, according to David Carr, senior insights manager at data analytics company Similarweb.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Some of the sites that saw the biggest increase change in their share of referral traffic from ChatGPT in April 2025 included The BBC (up 188.9% since January, driving about 118,000 visits), Fox News (up 166.3%, with about 113,000 visits) and The Independent (up 157.7%, with about 80,000 visits), according to Similarweb\u2019s data.<\/p><p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If I were to infer it, the same ChatGPT that was pulling traffic away from publishers is now channeling that traffic toward their websites. Even CRMs like HubSpot have also started showing AI-attributed views and leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-google-analytics-4\">Google Analytics 4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/ga4-for-publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Analytics 4<\/a> has been showing AI traffic under the \u201cReferral\u201d category since July 2024. Since October 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/chatgpt-in-adtech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a> traffic has also been categorized under the \u201cOrganic Traffic\u201d category. The event coincides with the introduction of ChatGPT Search, which provides users with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-real-time-bidding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">real-time<\/a>, updated responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, it isn\u2019t a mammoth task to look for AI traffic in GA4.<br><br>GA4 &gt;&gt; Reports &gt;&gt; Lifecycle &gt;&gt; Acquisition &gt;&gt; Traffic Acquisition. Initially, Google and Microsoft claimed that AI-generated citations lead to higher-quality clicks. But, a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/salt.agency\/blog\/do-users-really-show-higher-intent-when-they-click-through-from-an-llm-to-a-website\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dan Taylor<\/a> of SALT.agency proved it otherwise. However, the nuances of the report will provide a clearer view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcwrTJPpmMja7uq3IcZW5y7ZSuMrUR6JjfIJdBeE2whcRpsYW_uN1Dl02wPqA8ttIViRg4PmRSR2Lp7APmsUmI3YgX5wog53wbuU57bNXQiOZbSNmtKDYy--nSpA1LIlpWuBXBFcw?key=OfkuQ5AoqQkv51r5rX0raw\" alt=\"LLM vs Organic traffic conversions\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The LLM traffic (AI traffic) in certain sectors, such as Publishing, Health, and Real Estate, has shown higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/5-ad-engagement-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engagement<\/a> compared to the average organic traffic. However, the overall engagement of the LLM has been significantly lower compared to traditional organic traffic. On the other hand, a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knotch.com\/content\/llms-vs-seo-inside-knotchs-latest-data-on-evolving-audience-behavior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Knotch<\/a> found that LLM traffic drove conversions 2 times its traffic share compared to organic search traffic, which stood at 1.7 times its share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more data you gather, the more contradictory conclusions you will come to. This is quite understandable, as the LLM traffic is still in its nascent stage, and its behavior has yet to be studied comprehensively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, amongst the noise, SaaS stood out in terms of conversion rate benchmarks. The data clearly shows that the SaaS conversion rates are nearly identical between LLMs (6.69%) and Organic (6.71%) traffic sources. The difference is hardly 0.02%. Again, this is not an identified pattern and should be treated as an exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that being said, the SaaS numbers do expose certain user behaviors that are worth exploring. To begin with, LLMs\/AI chatbots are mainly built for research and answering informational queries. In short, they are ideal for research that requires heavy reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SaaS is one of the sectors where a user\u2019s product research builds their purchase intent. They are knowledge-hungry and readily invest time in reading about a product inside-out. Unlike with B2C users, where price and visuals dictate conversions, SaaS users buy based on the product\u2019s actual value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a publisher were to look for an ad partner to implement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/header-bidding-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">header bidding<\/a> or for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/best-app-monetization-platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">app monetization<\/a>, they would simply prompt: \u201cWhich is the best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/what-is-ad-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ad tech<\/a> company for header bidding?\u201d. In such cases, the LLM model would act like a personal product advisor, referencing comparison blogs, case studies, detailed guides, or e-books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the exact kind of structured content SaaS brands invest in, and LLMs rely on for their output.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say one creates the technical, long-form content; the other serves it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-ai-search-monitoring-tools-for-deeper-insights\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AI_Search_Monitoring_Tools_for_Deeper_Insights\"><\/span>AI Search Monitoring Tools for Deeper Insights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Diving deeper, I discovered several additional tools that specifically track and analyze AI traffic directed to a website. Their dashboard offers detailed insights, from prompts and sources to even mentions. It also provides industry rankings and competitor analysis, something that\u2019s worth exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-otterly-ai\">Otterly.AI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/otterly.ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Otterly.ai<\/a> is another platform that websites can employ to optimize their AI traffic. The primary focus of the platform is working on LLM traffic coming from three primary sources: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity.ai. Just like Peec AI, it also lets you know which prompt featured your website link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-profound-ai\">Profound AI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tryprofound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Profound AI<\/a> covers more ground compared to Otterly.ai by also targeting LLM traffic from Microsoft Copilot.
