Web push notifications, though, are 100 percent fact.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March this year, Google released Chrome version 42 in which it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/updates\/2015\/03\/push-notificatons-on-the-open-web\" rel=\"noopener\">enabled web push notifications<\/a> to, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allow your users to opt-in to timely updates from sites they love and allow you to effectively re-engage them with customized, engaging content<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Push notifications for websites are here to stay. And thus, it is important to understand what they are. Most of you reading this will be familiar with <\/span><b>mobile app push notifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are messages that are sent by an app which land in your notification tray.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are also familiar with <\/span><b>web notifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are notifications that a website sends to a user while the website is open on the user\u2019s browser.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of how Facebook sends you notifications like:&nbsp;<em>\u201cJonas mentioned you in a comment\u201d<\/em>. These appear only if Facebook was open on your browser when the event occurred. These are web notifications.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Web push notifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as <\/span><b>browser push notifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or just push notifications, if you\u2019re interested in saving your breath) work differently in that people who are subscribed will receive the notification, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even if the website is not open when the notification is being sent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is how it works:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&gt;&gt; As soon as a reader arrives on your desktop or mobile website, an opt-in box for push notifications is triggered. If the reader clicks on \u201cAllow\u201d he is added to your push notifications subscriber list. Either the subscriber closes the notification or he clicks on the notification and is taken to the content.<br\/>Publishers can use this unique functionality by sending instant content through push notifications like <strong>breaking news, stock market updates, updates for sporting events, weather forecasts, election day results<\/strong> etc.<br\/>If spread through other channels, this \u201cinstant\u201d content may seem dated to the reader if he has already read it on another website.<br\/>Sent in the form of a web push notification, this becomes a \u201c<em>digital nudge<\/em>\u201d encouraging the subscriber to know more and return to the website.<\/p> <\/li><li class=\"schema-how-to-step\" id=\"how-to-step-1667314559479\"><strong class=\"schema-how-to-step-name\"><strong>It&#8217;s easier for a reader to opt-in compared to email<\/strong><\/strong> <p class=\"schema-how-to-step-text\">Opting-in to receive web push notifications is a <strong>one-click process<\/strong>.<br\/>Compare this to the email opt-in process, which requires the reader to enter his email address at the very least.
